Last week we talked about some of our favourite comfort foods, and one such dish is the meat pie. A freshly baked pie in and of itself is a delicious comfort food – flaky pastry, warm and gooey centre; but meat pies are great because you get to eat them for dinner without feeling guilty that you had dessert first. And, the filling options are endless and sure to please even the pickiest eater.
Meat pies vary from tourtiere to pasty to shepherd’s pie, each with their own unique characteristics. But a traditional meat pie, dating as far back as 9,500 BC to Egypt, is typically just a savoury crust filled with meat and baked to golden perfection. Traditionally, the meat was beef, lamb or duck, but now you can definitely change it up to be anything that works for you and add different vegetables and sauces.
This winter, while the weather outside is frightful, stay warm inside with a savoury meat pie.
