The halls are decked, the stockings are stuffed and the kids are excitedly awaiting the arrival of Santa. Christmas Eve – it’s my favourite night of the year and has traditionally been the night that our family celebrates Christmas.
The tradition continues with our own kids now and we start the night off by baking Christmas cookies with the kids for Santa Claus and chopping up carrots for the reindeer. Then we’ll cozy up together with a hot cup of cocoa before tucking the kids in for the night.
But of course, as a family that loves food and trying new things, we don’t have just any hot chocolate, but instead enjoy this family recipe for Mexican hot cocoa. The combination of sweet chocolate and a subtle bite is delicious and warming.
Mexican Hot Chocolate
4 cups milk
3 tbsp. brown sugar, packed down
4 tbsp. of cocoa
2 tsp. of white sugar
1 1/2 tbsp. of cinnamon
1/2 tsp. chili powder
4 tbsp. chopped, good quality chocolate
Bring the milk to a simmer; add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a rolling simmer until the chocolate melts. Pour into mugs and add whipped cream or marshmallows. Enjoy!
