Well, the presents have been opened, the decorations put away and all of the Christmas goodies have been gobbled up. Now it’s time to focus on the new year, and with that inevitably comes new year’s resolutions.

One resolution that many people make with the arrival of a new year is a healthier lifestyle – whether that’s sticking to an exercise routine or eating healthy. But if these aspects aren’t something that’s already a part of your daily routine, then often these resolutions get broken just as quickly as they’re made. That’s why we suggest easing into it, particularly the food part.

Instead of doing a complete 180 and eating nothing but super healthy foods, just try opening yourself up to trying new things, even if it’s just trying soups that are lower on the fat scale. The Never Enough Thyme food shoppe will be offering such soups starting this month, including roasted red pepper, tomato and butternut squash, to name a few, which are all dairy-free.

Introducing a dairy-free or dairy-less diet into your life is a good way to reduce fat, but you can still get your calcium by substituting almond milk or rice milk for regular milk in recipes. Keep in mind that a savoury dish may not be the place to use almond milk, but for something like rice pudding, you can use almond milk and for vanilla pudding you can use rice milk.

Another helpful hint is to use rice pasta instead of regular pasta. It’s these little changes that can go a long way towards a healthier diet and will still allow you to enjoy the food groups and dishes that you enjoy.
