What originated in England has long since become popular throughout the U.K., United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand – the Sunday roast (or more commonly known in Canada today as Sunday dinner)

Traditionally this meal, beginning early afternoon and lasting into the evening, would consist of roasted meat, potatoes and accompaniments of Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, vegetables and gravy.

The origins of this meal in England are a bit hazy, but some say that during the industrial revolution, Yorkshire families would put the meat in the oven before heading to church on Sunday morning and it would then be ready when they returned. But a different history suggests that Sunday dinner began long before during medieval times. The village serfs served the squire six days a week, so on Sundays after church they would practice their battle techniques and were rewarded with a feast of oxen roasted on a spit.

Though the act of eating is necessary for nutrition and sustenance, meals aren’t just a time for families to eat; they also allow for a communal opportunity to talk and strengthen bonds.

So while you likely won’t be serving oxen this Sunday, or even roast, the tradition of Sunday dinner can still be prevalent in your household and the idea behind it goes far beyond whatever meal you decide to serve. It’s really all about spending quality time with your family.
