Cinco de Mayo translated to English means “fifth of May”, and on this day Americans and Mexicans (primarily in Puebla) celebrate Mexican heritage and pride while commemorating the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.
Whether you’re of Mexican heritage, want to celebrate such, or simply need an excuse to bust out the patio furniture now that spring is upon us, Cinco de Mayo is a great reason to host a party. Mexican food and culture is all about vibrant colours, spice and the warmth of friends and family, so as long as you have these ingredients, your Cindo de Mayo party is sure to be a hit – and maybe even an annual event.

To set the mood, be sure to decorate with streamers, balloons and flowers in bright, happy colours like pink and orange. Consider giving the female guests a vibrant flower that they can tuck behind their ears.

No Cinco de Mayo party would be right without a piñata, which both provides something fun for guests to partake in, and eliminates the need for you to put together grab bags. You can go traditional and stuff the piñata with candy, toys and trinkets (great if kids are attending), or make the piñata more adult-friendly and stuff it with mini bottles of alcohol and novelty gifts.

As for cuisine, chips and salsa is always a safe Mexican snack; but it’s also boring unless you make your own salsa. Spice it up just like Mexican food and make appetizer sized quesadillas with guacamole or gazpacho served in margarita glasses. And speaking of margaritas, they should definitely be the cocktail of the party.

Add a mariachi band, and the whole neighbourhood will want to come celebrate the fifth of May with you.
