As a local caterer with strong ties to the Elmira community, we’re all about supporting the local community and other entrepreneurs like ourselves. That includes using local produce in our recipes and educating the community on the farms that work so hard to offer us these fresh ingredients.

Martin’s Family Fruit Farm just outside of Waterloo on the way to Heidelberg is one such farm. No doubt you know about Martin’s if you live in the area as it’s been a landmark in the area since 1971 – though the Martin family has been farming since 1820. Today, the farm is still run by the Martin family with Leighton Martin, his sons and several grandchildren behind the scenes of Ontario’s finest apples.

With a retail store at the farm and a seasonal stand at the St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market, you can get your fix year-round. Though known for their apples and the cider that comes from it, Martin’s also offers other fresh fruit and vegetables when they’re in season, as well as jellies, jams, maple syrup and gift baskets.

We love that Martin’s has the same attitude that we do on educating the community about buying local, fresh produce and offering up some recipes for how to incorporate them into your daily life. This is why they host their annual harvest festival in early October.

This year the event is on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1. As is tradition, they’ll have free giveaways, refreshments, activities for kids and more. And of course there will be apple treats to enjoy and lots of literature on the art of growing a Martin’s apple.
